What's In This Course?

In this course, you will learn how to take one of your own favorite selfie pictures and turn it into a beautiful portrait art quilt!

This on-demand course includes modules of pre-recorded  lessons that give step by step instructions for how to design your own pattern to make a raw edge appliqué portrait quilt using a digital picture.

The moment you enroll, you will have full access to all of the course's content, as well as well as access to 5 live Zoom REPLAY sessions that were recorded during the initial live launch of the course.

You can move through the course at your own pace.  So, go as fast as you'd like or take your own sweet time!

Even though there aren't any scheduled live meetings again until later in 2022, the instructor is always available to answer questions, if you get stuck and need feedback I'm here to help.  There is also a private Facebook group for the class to share and receive support there as well.

First, you'll learn how to copy and create a template from a photograph and then transfer it to fabric form.  Once you have your template we will learn how to choose fabrics with confidence and then begin to design a custom and unique pattern and layout for your quilt.  I'll guide you through each step along the way.  You'll come away not only having learned a few new techniques, but you'll have that favorite selfie of yours forever etched in the fibers of your heart.

Don't worry if you're a little camera shy, you can always use the selfie or portrait of a close friend or family member and make it for them.  These are wonderfully unique gifts that will be treasured for generations to come.  And trust me, the recipients will love you forever!!!

So, no matter whether you are a confident beginner quilter or an intermediate/advanced quilter looking to add new tools and techniques to your tool-kit, this is the course for you!

The "Selfie Portrait" class I took with Kena was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I was not sure I could actually make a portrait quilt...and with Kena's detailed instructions, demonstrations, and personal feedback, walking me through the process, I have made one of my daughter and her new puppy, and am thrilled with the result. I didn't think I could do it! Thank you for the inspiration and expert instruction, Kena. I want to make more!

Kena Tangi Dorsey

Quilt Artist, Teacher, Designer

My name is Kena Tangi Dorsey, and I'm a quilt artist, teacher, speaker, mentor,  designer and owner of Kena Quilt Studio. I currently live in Palmdale, CA, but I began sewing and quilting a little over 20 years ago while living in Harlem, NYC.
Early on, I was influenced by many of the Harlem Renaissance artists such as Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, Zora Neale Hurston, James Van Der Zee, and Langston Hughes, to name a few. So, it’s no surprise that when I quickly became intrigued with portrait quilts, I  began making raw edge appliqué story and art quilts using images that reflect African American people.  While living in Harlem, I had an abundance of access to African shops and boutiques along 125th Street, so I began infusing African wax prints, kente cloth and mud cloth textiles into my quilting projects -  by making wall hangings, table runners and quilted bags with them.  I also love working with Indonesian Batiks and had fun purchasing a large collection of them on my trip to Indonesia a few years ago!  I teach both in- person and live virtual classes and workshops, and I want to share that passion with you!
So, no matter whether you are a confident beginner quilter or an intermediate/advanced quilter looking to add new tools and techniques to your tool-kit, my online courses are for you!
